IN-DEPTH INTERVIEWS WITH 10 FEMALE MILLENNIALS ON THE PORTRAYAL OF FOOD AND MILLENNIAL MODELS IN EDITORIAL FASHION IMAGES

Food is amongst the many subjects that is often depicted in editorial fashion photography as part of its narrative construction. Female Millennial models in many of these images, along with her interactions with the food, are often sexually objectified and imbued with sexual connotations. The lack of body size and ethnic diversity, the limited types of food illustrated and the way she interacts with the food are not truthful to the complex relationships Millennials have with food in real life.

Through the interviews with these 10 wonderful diverse women, age 18 to 25, the website serves to provide a snapshot of female Millennials’ relationships with food and authentically communicate them through candid photography.

PUBLICATION

The website is a component of my independent thesis project, which also consists of a 110-page publication.

The purpose of my research is to explore the ways in which editorial fashion images can more authentically represent a diversity of the chosen female Millennial audience and their relationships with food in an empowering, non-sexually objectifying light. The interviews with the 10 female Millennials are culminated into editorials recorded in the coffee table book, That's How She Eats. The book consists of original photography, illustrations and written content created by Anna Wong.
